Women in suits are often taken more seriously, notes Sarah, founder of clothing brand SUITS for her. She started her career as an advisor for educational boards, an environment where, according to her, a remarkable number of men in suits circulate. 'Often white, older men who exude authority,' she says. When she started dressing in the same way, she immediately noticed a difference. 'I received more assignments and was regularly allowed to present at meetings.'
Not only Sarah's appearance changed, but also her inner self: 'As soon as I look well-groomed – my makeup is done, my headscarf is sitting properly, and I'm wearing a suit – I feel that I can handle much more that day.' When finding the right clothes, Sarah didn't want to compromise on her style. She dresses according to modest fashion: clothing that is more covering. But she couldn't find a good suit.
She decided to ask around in her immediate surroundings. 'All my friends said: “I'm also looking for a modest suit.” It was clear to Sarah that there was a gap in the market. 'Then I thought: I'll just set it up myself.' It was the beginning of SUITS for her, with suits that are slightly longer and wider than average.
Special conversations
Last September, this earned Sarah a spot at Amsterdam Fashion Week, as part of a modest pop-up, featuring clothing brands curated by former Vogue editor-in-chief Yeliz Çiçek. There, special conversations arose, Sarah recounts.
One of those encounters was with a woman from the corporate world, a typical Zuidas professional in a high management position. Sarah: 'She told me that for her work she always wears suits, but often still has to have them altered by the tailor.' For an important meeting with publicly traded companies, which she would attend for the first time, she therefore decided to buy two suits from SUITS for her.
What made her story extra special: she wears a headscarf. 'In this world, you see few women like her,' says Sarah. 'She said that her manager had asked her to join those discussions. When she asked: “Why me? At these kinds of tables, they've never seen a woman like me,” he replied: “Precisely for that reason.”
